Why a boxer feels the cold (even though it's big)

It's hard to believe, but a dog as big and strong as the boxer is sensitive to cold, and the reason is its coat. The boxer has very short hair and lacks an undercoat, that second insulating layer that protects double-coated breeds like the husky. Without that natural insulation, it loses body heat easily as soon as the temperature drops.

That's why, in winter, a boxer appreciates a coat as much as a small short-haired dog. What size a boxer needs

The size is decided by chest girth, and the boxer, with its deep chest and musculature, is a large breed that goes to the highest size in our catalogue. This is the official chart, your main reference:

Most boxers, weighing around 27-36 kg, need size 3XL. The boxer doesn't need the same garment all year, and in its case there are two opposing factors to keep in mind: it feels the cold because of its short coat, but it's brachycephalic and suffers in heat. And when it's hot?

Here maximum caution applies. The boxer is brachycephalic (flat-nosed), like the french bulldog: it regulates its temperature worse and is prone to heatstroke. In summer or with high temperatures, don't put clothes on it that it doesn't need: an extra layer can be dangerous. Its combination of short coat (cold in winter) and flat nose (heat in summer) makes the seasonal criterion key: keep it warm in the cold, but leave it free of clothes in the heat. Always watch for signs of overheating —excessive panting, drooling, agitation— and cool it down immediately if they appear.

How to tell if the clothing fits well

In a boxer, with its deep chest and musculature, it's worth checking the fit calmly. Look at four things: that the chest fits without compressing the widest part of the thorax; that the neck goes in with slack and doesn't press; that the front legs stay free, with no pulling at the armpits; and that the garment doesn't cover the peeing area. In such an athletic breed, freedom of movement is especially important: the boxer needs to move, run and jump without the clothing holding it back.

If your boxer is between two sizes

It can happen, especially with large individuals right at the 3XL limit. The general rule is to size up, because in a deep-chested dog the garment must never compress the thorax.
